Egypt defeats Australia 4-2 on penalties to qualify for World Cup last 16
Egypt secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time, booking a place in the Round of 16 against either Argentina or Cape Verde.
Defender Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive penalty after Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed from the spot.
The Pharaohs made a dream start at the Dallas Stadium, taking the lead against the run of play in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour rose unmarked to head home Karim Hafez’s cross.
Ashour’s second goal of the tournament also saw Egypt surpass their combined goal tally from their previous three World Cup appearances in 1934, 1990 and 2018, taking their total to six goals at the tournament.
Australia nearly made the perfect start when Cristian Volpato’s long-range effort rattled the crossbar inside five minutes.
The Socceroos, who had won only one of their previous 15 World Cup matches after conceding first, struggled to find an equaliser despite creating several chances.
Their best first-half opportunity fell to Aziz Behich, but the defender failed to beat Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir from close range.
Egypt almost doubled their advantage moments after the restart when Omar Marmoush broke through on goal, only to roll his effort wide.
Australia capitalised on that miss in the 55th minute after Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned Aiden O’Neill’s free-kick into his own net, becoming only the second player in World Cup history to score two own goals in a single tournament.
The Socceroos, the last remaining representatives of the Asian Football Confederation, survived a dramatic stoppage-time scare when goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a superb save to deny Ramy Rabia’s powerful header from a Mohamed Salah cross.
Salah, who returned to the starting line-up after recovering from a hamstring concern, also created another late opportunity for Haissem Hassan, but Souttar produced a crucial block.
With neither side able to find a winner during extra time, the contest was decided by penalties, where Egypt kept their composure.
Salah was among the successful penalty takers as the Pharaohs completed a historic victory to advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in their World Cup history.
